Gender Differences and Motivation for The Teaching Profession: Why Do Men Choose (Not) To Teach?

The aim of this study was to explore gender differences in motivation for choosing teaching as a profession and perceptions men’s demotivation the choice profession. 279 preservice subject teachers from University Zagreb, Croatia, filled FIT-Choice Scale (Watt & Richardson, 2007) Demotivation Men Teaching Career Choice Scale. Results revealed that, regardless their gender, were primarily motivated by intrinsic social utility values teaching, while specific imply importance role factors career. Low status perceived dominant reason men choose it. Women more likely than assume that are demotivated because it is “women’s profession”. Policy implications findings on (de)motivation discussed.
